Thinking about a home charger for a new electric vehicle? The short answer is yes, in Queensland any hardwired EV charger must be installed by a licensed electrician. Here is what that means in practice, what the electrician actually does on the day, and the questions worth asking before you buy a charger.
What the law says in Queensland
Under Queensland electrical safety laws, installing a hardwired appliance is electrical work, and electrical work can only be carried out by a licensed electrician. That covers every wall-mounted EV charger, from a 7kW single phase unit to a 22kW three phase charger. DIY electrical work is illegal in Queensland, and an unlicensed installation can void your insurance and put your family at risk. You can check any electrician’s licence on the Electrical Safety Office Queensland website. Crusader Electrical & Air holds Queensland Electrical Contractor Licence 91149.
What about portable chargers that plug into a power point?
Most EVs come with a portable charging cable that plugs into a standard power point. You do not need an electrician to plug it in, but there is a catch: these chargers draw close to the maximum a household circuit can deliver, for hours at a time. Older circuits that share the garage power point with fridges, freezers or workshop tools can overheat or trip repeatedly under that kind of sustained load. If you plan to rely on portable charging, it is worth having an electrician check the circuit and, in many cases, run a dedicated circuit for the charging outlet.
What a licensed EV charger installation involves
Switchboard assessment
A 7kW charger is one of the largest single loads in a home. Before anything is mounted on the wall, the switchboard needs to be assessed for spare capacity, safety switch protection and overall condition. Homes with older boards often pair the charger install with a switchboard upgrade so the whole system is protected properly.
A dedicated circuit
The charger gets its own circuit from the switchboard with its own protection. That keeps charging off the circuits your household relies on and means an issue on one circuit never takes out the other.
Safe mounting and cable routing
The charger is mounted where the cable reaches the vehicle’s charge port without crossing walkways, and the circuit cabling is sized for the run length so the charger delivers its full rate.
Testing and certification
On completion you receive a Certificate of Test, the formal record that the installation was tested and complies. Keep it with your house documents; insurers and future buyers can ask for it.
Single phase or three phase?
Most Brisbane homes have single phase power, which supports charging up to about 7kW. That adds roughly 30 to 50 kilometres of range per hour for most EVs, which comfortably refills a daily commute overnight. Three phase homes can support faster 11kW or 22kW charging. Your electrician can tell you which supply you have in minutes, and whether a faster charger is worth it for how you drive.
Charging from solar
If you have panels on the roof, an EV charger can be set up to favour your own solar generation, so daytime charging runs largely on power you produced yourself. If you are considering both, planning the solar and battery system and the charger together usually gives a better result than adding them one at a time.
Questions to ask before you buy a charger
A few things worth confirming before you order a unit online: is it approved for use in Australia, does it suit your single or three phase supply, does it support solar-aware charging if that matters to you, and does the seller’s warranty require installation by a licensed electrician? Answering these first avoids buying a charger that does not suit your home.
