EV Charger Installation Brisbane
Crusader Electrical & Air installs EV chargers for Brisbane homes and businesses. As a licensed electrical contractor (Lic. No. 91149), we handle the full installation from the switchboard through to the charging outlet, including any switchboard work required to support the added load.
A dedicated EV charging circuit gives you faster, safer overnight charging compared to a standard power point. Most home EV chargers operate at 7kW or above, which requires a properly rated circuit and a qualified electrician to install legally in Queensland.
We install wall-mounted EV charging units from major brands, run dedicated circuits from the switchboard to the garage or carport, and carry out any required switchboard upgrades before installation. If your home already has solar, we can also discuss how to time charging around your system output.

EV Charger Installation -- Common Questions
Do I need a licensed electrician to install an EV charger?
Yes. In Queensland, connecting any fixed electrical equipment -- including EV chargers -- to your home's wiring is electrical work that must be performed by a licensed electrician. Installing a dedicated charging circuit yourself, or using an unlicensed person, is illegal and will void your home and vehicle insurance.
Can I just use a regular power point to charge my EV?
A standard 10A power point will charge most EVs, but very slowly -- typically around 10 to 15 kilometres of range per hour. For practical overnight charging, a dedicated 32A circuit with a wall-mounted charging unit delivers roughly 40 to 50km of range per hour and uses a proper earthed connection designed for sustained high-current loads.
Do I need to upgrade my switchboard to install an EV charger?
It depends on your existing switchboard. Older switchboards with ceramic fuses will need upgrading before we can add a dedicated EV circuit. Modern switchboards with adequate spare capacity can usually accommodate an EV charger without a full upgrade, though a new circuit and breaker are still required. We assess this during our site visit.
Can I install an EV charger outside or in a carport?
Yes. Outdoor EV charging installations require an IP-rated (weatherproof) charging unit and appropriate cable protection. We install outdoor charging points for open carports, driveways, and undercover areas -- all weatherproofed and compliant with Queensland electrical standards.
How long does EV charger installation take?
A straightforward installation -- switchboard to garage with no major cable runs -- typically takes half a day. Longer cable runs, switchboard work, or outdoor installations in complex locations may take a full day. We give you a time estimate when we quote.
Can I install an EV charger in a rental property?
As the tenant, you need written permission from your landlord before making any permanent electrical installation. Some landlords are open to EV chargers, particularly as demand from EV-driving tenants grows. As the installing electrician, we require written owner consent before proceeding with work on a rental property. We can provide a written scope of works document to assist your application to the landlord.
Can I install an EV charger in an apartment or body corporate building?
Yes, but this requires body corporate approval and careful planning around shared switchboards. We have carried out EV charger installations in apartment blocks and can help navigate the body corporate requirements and meter arrangements. Call us on 07 3060 9105 to discuss your situation.
Is there a rebate available for EV charger installation in Queensland?
Queensland has periodically offered rebates and incentive schemes for EV adoption. We recommend checking the Queensland Government's EV rebate page directly for current availability, as schemes open and close. We do not make claims about active rebates in our quotes as these change and it is your responsibility to confirm eligibility before relying on them.
What if my switchboard is old or full?
If there is no room in the switchboard for a dedicated circuit breaker, or if the switchboard still uses ceramic fuses, we carry out a switchboard upgrade first. This is common in homes built before 1990. We quote the full scope upfront including switchboard work so there are no surprises on the day.
Do you install chargers for businesses and commercial properties?
Yes. We install EV chargers for commercial properties including car dealerships, retail carparks, office buildings, and industrial sites. Commercial installations often involve three-phase power, load management systems, and multiple charge points. Speak to our commercial team on 07 3060 9105.

How EV Charger Installation Works
Installing an EV charger at your Brisbane home or business is a straightforward process when handled by a licensed electrician. Here is what to expect from start to finish.
Site Assessment
We assess your switchboard capacity, cable run distance from the switchboard to your garage or carport, and whether any existing circuits need to be upgraded. Most modern homes can accommodate a 7kW charger with minimal work, but older switchboards or homes without a spare single-phase circuit may need additional preparation.
Switchboard Preparation
A dedicated circuit breaker and, where not already installed, a safety switch (RCD) are fitted to your switchboard. This dedicated circuit means your EV charger does not compete with other household loads, reducing the risk of tripping and ensuring consistent charging performance. If your switchboard needs upgrading, we carry out that work first. Call 07 3060 9105 to discuss your switchboard's current capacity.
Cable Installation
Correctly rated cable is run from the switchboard to your charge point location. Depending on the layout of your home, this may be run through the roof cavity, along the wall, or through conduit. All cable work complies with Australian Standard AS/NZS 3000.
Charger Mounting and Connection
The wall-mounted EV charging unit is fixed securely, connected, and tested. We confirm the charger communicates correctly with your vehicle and that charging initiates and stops as expected.
Compliance Certificate
All electrical work carried out by Crusader Electrical is accompanied by a Certificate of Test, the legal compliance document issued by a licensed electrical contractor in Queensland. This is required by your energy retailer and protects your home insurance.
Types of EV Chargers We Install
There are two main categories of home EV charger: trickle chargers (Mode 2) and dedicated wall chargers (Mode 3). We recommend and install Mode 3 chargers for all permanent residential and commercial installations.
7kW Single-Phase Chargers
The most common home EV charger in Australia. A 7kW charger will fully charge most electric vehicles overnight in 6 to 12 hours depending on battery size. This is the right choice for the majority of Brisbane homes with single-phase power supply. Single-phase chargers are cost-effective to install and compatible with every EV sold in Australia.
11kW and 22kW Three-Phase Chargers
Homes and businesses with three-phase power supply can install faster chargers. A 22kW charger can fully charge many vehicles in under 2 hours. Not all vehicles can accept three-phase charging, so it pays to check your vehicle's onboard charger rating before specifying a three-phase unit. Commercial properties with fleet vehicles benefit most from three-phase installations. Call us on 07 3060 9105 to discuss which charger suits your vehicle and property.
Smart EV Chargers
Smart chargers allow you to schedule charging during off-peak electricity tariff periods, monitor energy usage via a smartphone app, and, if you have solar, automatically shift charging to coincide with solar production. We install and commission smart chargers from several leading brands and can help you connect the app during installation.
EV Charger Installation and Solar Integration
If your home already has a solar system, or you are planning to install solar alongside an EV charger, combining the two can significantly reduce your running costs. An EV is the single largest discretionary electrical load in most homes, and shifting charging to daylight hours when your panels are producing means the energy driving your car costs you very little.
Crusader Electrical installs both solar systems and EV chargers, which means we can plan the switchboard layout to accommodate both from the start. This avoids the common problem of arriving on site with a new EV charger only to find the switchboard has no room for an additional circuit.
Some smart charger models can receive a signal from your solar inverter and automatically ramp up charging when surplus solar is available. We can advise on compatible combinations of inverter and charger. Speak to our team on 07 3060 9105 to discuss your solar and EV setup.
Factors That Affect EV Charger Installation Cost
The cost of EV charger installation varies depending on several factors. Being transparent about these helps you plan your budget accurately.
Cable run distance: The further your switchboard is from your garage or carport, the more cable and conduit is required. A garage directly adjacent to the switchboard is a straightforward installation; a carport at the other end of the property requires a longer run and more materials.
Switchboard condition: Older switchboards with ceramic fuses or no safety switches will need upgrading before a dedicated EV circuit can be added safely. We quote switchboard work as a separate line item so you can see exactly what is involved.
Cable routing complexity: Concrete slabs, tiled areas, or long conduit runs through finished walls add time. We assess this during the site inspection and build it into your quote.
Charger hardware: Basic single-phase chargers start from around $400 to $800 in hardware cost. Smart chargers with app connectivity and solar integration sit higher. We do not recommend or supply specific brands in advance without understanding your vehicle and usage pattern, call 07 3060 9105 to discuss.
