Safety switches and circuit breakers do two different jobs. A circuit breaker protects the wiring in your home by cutting power when a circuit is overloaded or short circuits. A safety switch protects people by cutting power in a fraction of a second when it detects electricity leaking to earth, such as through a damaged appliance or, in the worst case, through a person. Many Brisbane homes have both, some older homes have only circuit breakers, and knowing the difference could save a life.
What a circuit breaker does
A circuit breaker sits in your switchboard and monitors the amount of current flowing through a circuit. When too many appliances draw power at once, or a fault causes a short circuit, the breaker trips and cuts the power before the wiring overheats. This protects your home from electrical fires and damage to the wiring itself.
Circuit breakers replaced ceramic fuses in most homes decades ago. If your switchboard still uses plug-in ceramic fuses, it is well overdue for a switchboard upgrade.
What a safety switch does
A safety switch, known technically as a residual current device or RCD, monitors the balance of current flowing in and out of a circuit. When electricity leaks out of the circuit, for example through a faulty appliance, damaged cord, or a person receiving a shock, the safety switch detects the imbalance and cuts power in as little as 0.03 seconds. That speed is what prevents a shock from becoming a fatal electrocution.
The easiest way to spot a safety switch in your switchboard is the test button on the front, usually marked with a T or the word Test. Circuit breakers do not have one.
What Queensland requires
Queensland law has required safety switches on power circuits in new homes since the early 1990s, and the requirements have expanded over time. When a home is sold or leased, the presence of a safety switch must be declared, and one must be installed if missing. Older homes are the gap: a house wired before the rules came in may have safety switches on some circuits and none on others, or none at all.

Do you need both?
Yes. The two devices protect against different risks, so one cannot replace the other. A circuit breaker will not react to a person receiving an electric shock, because the current involved is far too small to trip it. A safety switch will not protect wiring from a slow overload. Modern switchboards often use combination devices called RCBOs, which build both functions into a single unit, one per circuit.
How to test your safety switch
Press the test button on the safety switch every three months. The switch should trip immediately and cut power to its circuits. Reset it by pushing the lever back up. If it does not trip, or it trips on its own regularly, have it inspected. Frequent unexplained tripping usually points to a faulty appliance or a wiring fault rather than a faulty switch.
When to call an electrician
Book a licensed electrician if your switchboard has no safety switches, only some circuits are protected, the test button does not trip the switch, or your home still runs on ceramic fuses.
