Learn MoreChoosing the Right System Size
The right solar system size depends on how your household uses power, not just roof space. We look at your daytime consumption, whether anyone is home during the day, and what is coming next: an EV, a pool, ducted air conditioning, or an electric hot water upgrade all change the maths. Sizing for the future usually costs less than expanding a small system later.
Battery sizing works the same way. A battery sized to your evening usage keeps solar power running your home after sunset, while an oversized battery ties up money in capacity you rarely use. We model both before recommending anything, and we explain the reasoning in plain terms with the quote. Read more about solar panel installation and battery storage, or call 07 3060 9105 to talk through your usage.
Warranties and Aftercare
Solar hardware carries manufacturer warranties: panels typically carry a long performance warranty, and inverters and batteries carry their own product warranties. On top of that, our installation work is covered by our written workmanship warranty and completed under Electrical Contractor Licence 91149 with a Certificate of Test for the electrical work.
Aftercare matters as much as the install. We remain available for monitoring setup, fault-finding, inverter replacement when an older unit reaches the end of its life, and battery retrofits to existing systems. If your system stops exporting or a fault light appears, one call reaches the team that installed it.
Solar & Battery - Common Questions
Straight answers to what Brisbane homeowners usually ask before installing.
Do I need to upgrade my switchboard for solar?
Many older Brisbane homes have switchboards that are not compatible with modern solar inverters or battery systems. Before installation begins, we assess your existing switchboard to determine if an upgrade is required. A switchboard upgrade is a separate cost but is often necessary for safety and to meet network requirements. We carry out switchboard upgrades as part of the overall solar job where needed.
What size solar system do I need?
System sizing depends on your daily electricity consumption, roof orientation, available roof space, and whether you plan to add a battery or EV charger. A typical Brisbane family home will often look at a 6.6 kW to 10 kW system, but this varies significantly by property and usage. Crusader can assess your electrical setup and advise on what makes sense for your property before you commit.
Does solar affect my switchboard safety switches?
Solar systems generate power that flows back through your switchboard, which can affect how safety switches and circuit breakers behave. A properly installed solar system, connected by a licensed electrician, is configured to meet AS/NZS 4777 grid connection requirements. This includes correct isolation switching and ensuring safety switches are compatible with the inverter output.
Can I add a battery to my existing solar system?
In most cases yes, but compatibility depends on your existing inverter make and model. Some inverters are battery-ready and only require a compatible battery and a software update. Others require a separate battery inverter or a hybrid inverter to replace the existing unit. We assess your current system before recommending a battery solution.
How long does solar installation take?
A typical residential solar installation takes one day, with battery storage adding a few hours. More complex jobs, such as those requiring a switchboard upgrade at the same time, may take a day and a half to two days. The grid connection process with Energex takes additional time after installation, typically 5 to 20 business days. Your system will be live for self-consumption during this period, but you will not receive feed-in credits until the bi-directional meter is configured.
How long do solar panels last?
Quality solar panels carry a product warranty of 10 to 15 years and a performance warranty of 25 to 30 years, guaranteeing output above a specified level (typically 80 to 85% of original output). Real-world degradation of well-maintained panels is typically less than 0.5% per year. Inverters have shorter warranties (typically 5 to 10 years) and are more likely to need replacement over the life of a solar system.
Do I need council approval for solar panels in Brisbane?
In most cases, no. Rooftop solar panels on residential properties in Brisbane are exempt from development approval under Queensland planning rules, provided the panels do not extend beyond the roof area and the installation complies with standards. Heritage-listed properties may have additional requirements. We advise on any specific requirements during the site assessment.
What happens to my solar system in a blackout?
Standard grid-tied solar systems shut down automatically during a grid outage for safety reasons, which protects Energex workers. If you want solar power during a blackout, you need a system configured with backup capability, which requires a compatible hybrid inverter and a sub-board to separate backup loads.
What is the Small-scale Technology Certificate (STC) rebate?
The federal government's Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme provides a point-of-sale discount on eligible solar installations through STCs. The value of the discount depends on your location, the system size, and the current STC price. We apply the STC discount directly to your installation quote, you do not need to claim it separately. The scheme is scheduled to phase out by 2030, so larger discounts are available sooner.

How Solar & Battery Installation Works
Getting solar installed in Brisbane is a significant decision. Here is what happens from initial assessment through to a live system.
Site Assessment and System Design
We start with a roof assessment: orientation, pitch, shading from trees or adjacent structures, and roof condition. A north-facing roof in Brisbane produces the most output per panel, but east-west split arrays are increasingly common and can better match household consumption patterns across the day. We design the system to your actual usage, not just a standard package size. Call 07 3060 9105 to book a site assessment.
Switchboard Check
Before any panels go on the roof, we check your switchboard. An older switchboard with ceramic fuses or insufficient safety switches must be upgraded before a solar inverter can be connected. We identify this upfront so it is included in your quote, not discovered on installation day.
Panel and Inverter Installation
Panels are mounted on a racking system fixed to your roof structure. The inverter, which converts the DC output of the panels to AC power usable in your home, is mounted on an external or garage wall, typically near the switchboard. All DC wiring is run in conduit and correctly rated for outdoor and roof-space conditions, carried out by our licensed solar installers in full compliance with AS/NZS 5033.
Grid Connection and Meter Application
After installation is complete, we submit a connection application to your network distributor (Energex in South East Queensland). This process typically takes 5 to 20 business days. Your retailer also needs to configure your meter for bi-directional metering so you receive feed-in credit for any surplus power exported. We handle the paperwork and keep you informed of progress.
Battery Storage Installation (Optional)
A battery storage system stores surplus solar generation for use after dark, reducing your reliance on grid power in the evening peak. Battery systems are installed alongside or after a solar system. The battery connects to your switchboard, and in some configurations to the inverter, and requires a dedicated electrical circuit.
