Signs Your Switchboard Needs Upgrading

Many Brisbane homes still have older switchboards designed for far lower electrical loads than modern households demand. Air conditioners, EV chargers, heat pump hot water systems, and several large appliances running at once can easily overload an older board. The result is nuisance tripping, overheating, or in serious cases an electrical fire.

Common signs that a switchboard upgrade may be needed include:

  • Breakers or fuses that trip or blow frequently
  • A fuse box using ceramic or rewireable fuses rather than circuit breakers
  • No safety switches installed on power or lighting circuits
  • Flickering lights or unexplained power fluctuations
  • Burning smells or scorch marks near the switchboard
  • Planning to install solar panels, an EV charger, or ducted air conditioning, all of which may require additional circuits
  • A home built before the 1990s that hasn’t had switchboard work done

Call Crusader Electrical & Air on 07 3060 9105 to arrange a switchboard inspection. Our licensed electricians will assess your board, advise on what’s required, and provide a clear quote before any work begins.

Safety Switches and Switchboard Compliance

Queensland regulations require safety switches (RCDs) on all power and lighting circuits in residential properties. Older switchboards often lack adequate safety switch coverage, meaning circuits are exposed to fault current risk that a safety switch would otherwise interrupt within milliseconds.

A switchboard upgrade is also the right time to ensure your home’s earthing system is sound and that circuit labelling is accurate. Crusader Electrical & Air carries out all switchboard work to current Australian Standards (AS/NZS 3000) and Queensland electrical safety requirements. All work is inspected and certified on completion.

Switchboard Upgrades Brisbane FAQs

Common switchboard questions from Brisbane homeowners, answered by a licensed electrical contractor.

How much does a switchboard upgrade cost?

Switchboard upgrade costs vary depending on the size of your current board, the number of circuits required, and whether additional safety switches or earthing work is needed. The best way to get an accurate figure is to have one of our licensed electricians inspect your switchboard and provide a written quote. Call 07 3060 9105 to book an assessment.

How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?

If it still has ceramic fuses, lacks safety switches, trips often, or has no room for new circuits, it's worth having assessed. Call 07 3060 9105 for an inspection.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

Most residential switchboard upgrades are completed within a single day. Larger or more complex upgrades, such as those requiring new metering arrangements or significant additions to the number of circuits, may take longer. Your power will need to be off during the upgrade, so our team will confirm the estimated timeframe when they provide your quote.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade to install solar panels or an EV charger?

It depends on the current capacity and condition of your switchboard. Solar panel installations and EV chargers require dedicated circuits, and older boards may not have the available capacity or the appropriate safety switch coverage. Our electricians can advise on whether an upgrade is needed as part of any solar or EV charger installation. Call 07 3060 9105 to discuss.

Is a switchboard upgrade required by law?

There is no blanket legal deadline for upgrading a switchboard. Queensland regulations do require safety switches on circuits, and any electrical work on your property must meet current standards. If your switchboard is found to be unsafe during an inspection or when other electrical work is being carried out, upgrades may be required before work can proceed.

Are safety switches required by law in Queensland?

Safety switches are a mandatory rental compliance requirement in Queensland, and are strongly recommended for all homes given the level of protection they provide against electric shock.

Do I need three-phase power for my home?

Most standard homes run fine on single-phase. Three-phase becomes relevant for larger loads such as workshop equipment, some ducted air conditioning systems, or higher-output EV charging. We can advise based on what you're planning to install.

Will upgrading my switchboard affect my home insurance?

An upgraded, compliant switchboard is generally viewed favourably by insurers, since it reduces electrical fire and shock risk. Check with your insurer directly for specifics on your policy.

What is an RCBO and why do electricians recommend them?

An RCBO combines a circuit breaker and a safety switch in a single unit, so each circuit gets both overload protection and shock protection. The practical benefit is isolation: a fault on one circuit trips only that circuit, instead of dropping several at once. Most modern switchboard upgrades use RCBOs for every circuit.

Will my power be off during a switchboard upgrade?

Yes, for part of the day. We isolate the supply while the old board is removed and the new one is fitted and tested. For a straightforward domestic upgrade the outage usually lasts a few hours, and we confirm the expected window before we start so you can plan around it.

Does a switchboard upgrade include surge protection?

It can. A surge protection device fitted at the switchboard shields the whole home from voltage spikes caused by storms or network switching, which matters in Brisbane's summer storm season. Tell us the appliances you most want protected and we will include the right device in the quote.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

Most single home upgrades are done in half a day to a day. The power is off for part of that, and we confirm the outage window with you before the day so you can plan around it.

Can surge protection be added during the upgrade?

Yes, and it is the cheapest moment to do it. A whole of home surge protection device fits into the new board and shields air conditioners, ovens, TVs and solar inverters from spikes on the network.

Types of Switchboards

Older Brisbane homes typically have one of two switchboard types: a ceramic fuse board or an early circuit breaker board without safety switches. Ceramic fuse boards use rewireable fuse wire that needs replacing every time a circuit overloads. They also lack the safety switches that modern boards rely on to prevent electric shock.

A modern switchboard uses circuit breakers instead of fuses, along with residual current devices (safety switches) fitted to protect each circuit group. Many newer boards also separate circuits by area, such as lighting, general power, and dedicated appliance circuits. That separation makes faults easier to isolate and diagnose.

Ceramic Fuse vs Modern Switchboard

A ceramic fuse board relies on a strand of fuse wire burning out under overload. It works, but it's slow to respond compared with a circuit breaker, doesn't reset without physically rewiring the fuse, and offers no protection against electric shock from earth leakage. If your board still has ceramic fuses, it almost certainly predates the safety switch requirements introduced in Queensland decades ago.

A modern switchboard with circuit breakers and safety switches responds to a fault in a fraction of a second. It resets with a flick of a switch and meets current Australian Standards. For any home with young children, older residents, or outdoor power use, this difference matters for everyday safety, not just compliance.

When to Upgrade Your Switchboard

Common triggers for an upgrade include renovations that add new circuits, solar and battery storage, or a new EV charger. Others have run out of physical space for new breakers, or still have a board on ceramic fuses. If your safety switch trips often, or you don't have one at all, that's also a sign the board needs attention.

Selling or renting out a property is another common trigger. Buyers and tenants expect a compliant modern board, and safety switches are a rental compliance requirement in Queensland. If you're planning any of these, call 07 3060 9105 to have the board assessed before other work goes ahead.

What's Involved in a Switchboard Upgrade

We start by assessing your current board and the load your home places on it, including any planned additions like solar, an EV charger, or reverse-cycle air conditioning. From there we install a new board sized for current and near-future needs. We fit circuit breakers and safety switches for each circuit group, then test everything before reconnecting power.

Most residential switchboard upgrades are completed in a single day, with a short, planned power outage while the changeover happens. We coordinate the work to keep that outage as brief as possible.

Three-Phase Power

Some homes and most commercial premises run on three-phase power rather than single-phase. Three-phase supports larger loads such as workshop equipment, three-phase air conditioning, and higher-output EV charging. If you're adding equipment that needs three-phase supply, your switchboard and the connection to the street may both need upgrading, which involves coordination with your electricity distributor.

We handle three-phase switchboard upgrades for both residential and commercial electrical clients, and can advise early in a renovation or build about whether three-phase power is worth planning for.

How We Quote and Run a Switchboard Upgrade

Every upgrade starts with a look at the existing board: what circuits it carries, whether the wiring behind it is sound, and what the house actually needs now rather than what it needed in 1985. You get a fixed written quote from that inspection, not a guess over the phone.

On the day, the power is off for part of the job, and we plan that window with you in advance. The new board gets safety switches on every circuit, properly rated breakers, clear labelling, and room for whatever is coming next, air conditioning, an EV charger or solar. Whole of home surge protection can be added at the same time for less than fitting it later. Everything is tested before the power goes back on, and you receive a Certificate of Test.

Storm season is when old boards fail. If yours still runs ceramic fuses, our storm season checklist explains why spring is the right time, and the residential electrician page covers the smaller jobs we can bundle into the same visit.
